Handmade Books and Texture Exploration
$100.00

2 Day Bookmaking Workshop

In this Open Studio workshop, students will explore bookmaking as a way to collect memories, textures, observations, and personal narratives.

Inspired by the work of contemporary bookmakers and artists, we will look at how books can become sculptural objects, visual journals, containers for emotion, or spaces for experimentation.

Students will create their own handmade artist book using recycled and found materials. Students will cut and shape pages, construct covers, and experiment with structure, texture, layering, and relief using cardboard, fabric, collage materials, and three-dimensional elements.

With the remaining time we will begin filling their books through sensory and process-based mark making. Using natural materials, paint, drawing tools, collage, collected textures, and optional writing prompts, participants will explore ways of documenting observations, moods, environments, and experiences within the pages of their handmade books.

No prior experience required. All materials provided.

fostering creative expression

Open Studio is a contemporary art-inspired workshop series created by Hammerspace Gallery that encourages play, observation, collaboration, experimentation, and creative confidence through hands-on making experiences.

These workshops emphasize process-based exploration, sensory engagement, curiosity, and personal expression.

Each workshop is connected to the work of living artists from our local community and beyond. By connecting every workshop to real artists working today, the program helps participants understand the broader context of contemporary art.
