We are at risk of loosing important voices. Artist Mothers are under an ever increasing list of demands in a system that was not built to allow the rhythm of caregiving.
Major studies now show that “Around 76% of women aged 35–54 report facing structural barriers. The highest attrition risk (50.6%) is among women aged 35–44—the exact cohort needed for leadership roles. The lack of workplace flexibility and the high cost of living are increasingly cited as making arts jobs "incompatible" with caregiving and family responsibilities”
Many artist mothers are forced to pause or retire their creative careers after becoming mothers. This massive drain has a profound effect on culture and is completely preventable. Because what mothers need is the support of a community. One that can hold her rhythms, contradictions, her constraints, fears and her ever present well of inspiration that lives with the humans she is raising. While at the same time offering accountability, support in producing a new body of work, professional development, networking and exhibition opportunities. That is what Mothers have found within Hammerspace’s Artist Cohort.
Funding a scholarship helps us ensure that artists are selected based on need, commitment, and potential rather than financial circumstances. Help us keep these voices in the arts.
